Nakshatra
The nakshatras are 27 star segments of the zodiac, each 13 degrees 20 minutes wide, used heavily in Vedic astrology.
What it is
Besides the twelve signs, Vedic astrology divides the zodiac into 27 lunar mansions, roughly the distance the Moon travels in one day. Each nakshatra has a ruling planet, a deity and a character of its own.
How the tradition uses it
The nakshatra of the Moon at birth sets the starting point of the dasha system, the planetary periods that structure a chart over time. The nakshatra the Moon passes through each day colours the tone of that day.
In AstroFinex
The engine tracks the Moon's nakshatra and uses nakshatras when it calculates each instrument's dasha periods from its natal chart.
